Some of you may remember that Vulcan No. 2 was withdrawn from service in November and last month brought to the shop of Hercules Power Equipment in Los Angeles. Since then, the boiler has been thoroughly inspected, ultrasonically tested, and assessed for repairs. It is apparent now that the scope of the needed work is considerably more than expected, and management is exploring options of repairing/replacing the vessel. In any event, one can’t argue that this 80+ year old quarry boiler — still with its original, riveted firebox — hasn’t done its job well.
HPEI is one of few ASME “S” stamp-holding facilities in California capable of manufacturing new locomotive boilers. In recent years, they manufactured the current boiler for Disneyland Railroad No. 5 “Ward Kimball.”
